At-Home Skin Tightening, Myth or Must Have?

A Closer Look at Reva Instant Age Renewal Wand

 IN THIS ARTICLE:

7-minute read

More of us are looking to target sagging skin from home, this increasing demand has led to the emergence of many at-home skin-tightening devices such as the Project E Beauty Reva Instant Age Renewal Wand.

Here we take a closer look at this skin-tightening device incorporating 5 anti-aging technologies including LED light therapy, radio frequency, EMS, electroporation, and ultrasound to determine if we can forgo our in-clinic treatments for at-home alternatives.

Robiya’s success suggests so, she used skin tightening four times over one week trial period. Let’s see how she got on.

What is Skin Tightening?

Skin tightening treatments are designed to restore skin elasticity and firmness that we lose with age. Collagen loss, that kick starts in our 20s, can leave us with sagging skin and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The goal of skin tightening is to boost collagen production and light and tighten the skin to restore it as close as possible to its former glory. Techniques include radio frequency, IPL, ultrasound, and microcurrent.

What is Radio Frequency Skin Tightening?

Reva uses a popular skin tightening technique known as radio frequency or ‘rf skin tightening’. Electrical currents create thermal energy on the skin, changing the structure of proteins to boost collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This gives the face a more lifted and volumized appearance. It can also dissolve and mobilize fat cells under the chin and around the jaw area. Reva combines radio frequency and ultrasound into one treatment mode called ‘URF’.

What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound technology works by delivering ultrasonic waves with a frequency of 3MHz,±5% to the skin. These waves create micro-vibrations that penetrate the dermal layer of the skin to stimulate cellular activity to produce collagen for firmer and tighter skin. The vibrations also improve the absorption of skincare products.

What is Electroporation?

Reva uses a unique form of electroporation called ‘revolving electroporation pulse’. Electroporation uses high-voltage electrical currents to create temporary pores in the cell membrane. This allows transdermal delivery of skincare products into the skin more efficiently. Where the cell membrane stays intact, skincare products with larger molecules will typically stay on the skin’s surface. The electrical currents also cause skin vibrations to boost collagen, reduce fine lines, and tighten sagging skin. Revolving electroporation pulse (REP) is a technique that delivers the electrical currents in a high-pulsed rotation for deep tissue stimulation. The current pulses across 6 24-carat gold-plated probes.

What is EMS?

EMS can be thought of as a workout for your facial muscles. It is one of the only skin tightening treatments that targets beyond the skin layers and into the 43 facial muscles. A mild electrical current is passed through the skin energizing the muscles to release more Adenosine Triphosphate (the chemical responsible for producing key proteins such as collagen and elastin). The contraction and relaxation of the muscles improve muscle tone and tightness and boost cell oxygenation to promote better nourishment of the cells.

What is LED Light Therapy?

LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of colored light to penetrate the skin’s surface to rejuvenate skin health and appearance. Each color serves a unique purpose. Reva combines red, blue, and yellow light therapy. Red has anti-aging properties, blue treats acne and yellow heals and soothes the skin.

Robiya’s Story: At-Home Skin Tightening Before and After?

RF skin tightening at-home device before and after

Robiya was primarily concerned with the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines as well as some noticeable sagging. She was also concerned about her pore size and some uneven skin tone and texture. With naturally dry skin, Robiya did not want to apply anything that could aggravate this dryness. Before introducing Reva into her routine, Robiya had an already pretty robust skincare routine including weekly microdermabrasion exfoliations and LED light therapy mask three times per week. Despite this, she felt something was lacking from here routine and wanted to accelerate her results with Reva.

Treatment 1: I used the device at the lowest intensity as a precaution. I didn’t notice any major changes directly after the treatment.

Treatment 2: I increased the level. I noticed that my skin appeared more hydrated after the treatment.

Treatment 3: The third time I used Reva I increased to intensity level 3. My skin was definitely fresher and more beautiful after the third treatment. My wrinkles were also becoming less noticable.

Treatment 4: On my fourth treatment, I increased the intensity level to level 4. I could clearly feel a tingling sensation from the device. My skin was glowing immeidtely after the treatments and looks incredibly fresh.

We asked Robiya if she was happy with the treatment overall

Answer: This device truly works wonders. I love the way it brings a glow to my skin and restores its tone, greatly enhancing the contour of my face. Definitely a worthwhile investment.

Is At-Home Skin Tightening Safe?

Yes, at home skin tightening is safe. To ensure proper safety however make sure you are purchasing your device from a reputable brand and it has at least one safety mark. Most brand will come with built-in safety features to protect against any risk, especially burnong or excessive redness. Reva has unique overheating sensing system that ensures the device only heats up with in contact with the skin to mitigate any risk of burns from radio frequency and electroporation modes. As Robiya did, make sure to gradually increase intensity and duration of treatments to prevent any irritation.

How Long Does At-Home Skin Tightening Last?

Results from at-home skin tightening vary based on the treatment and factors like skin type, age, and lifestyle. Simple methods like skincare products, facial exercises, or massages offer brief improvements, requiring ongoing use to maintain effects. More advanced options, such as radio frequency or laser devices, tend to provide more significant, longer-lasting results, potentially lasting from several weeks to months.

Consistency of treatment is very important with at-home skin tightening devices for sustained results.

Who is Suitable for At-Home Skin Tightening?

Skin tightening is an ideal middle ground between topical skincare solutions and more invasive in-clinic treatments such as a surgical facelift which requires significant downtime.

The Takeaway: Does At-Home Skin Tightening Work?

Skin tightening is a term that can be used to describe many anti-aging treatments such as laser, microneedling, EMS, radio frequency, electroporation and much more. If you invest in the correct device at-home skin tightening can be a very worthwhile treatment option to boost collagen production and tighten sagging skin without costly salon visits. Ensure the device integrates proven technologies and techniques so you know you are getting the most bang for your buck. Skin tightening can offer instant results, but a consistent routine is important to experience the full collagen boosting and skin tightening benefits of these devices over the long term.
